A First Step in Creating a More Comprehensive Interoperability Measurement

On November 6, 2020, 49 healthcare executives and 64 healthcare IT vendor executives came together virtually to address the next steps of interoperability measurement. Reconvening from KLAS’ last interoperability measurement summit, held in 2017, stakeholders addressed the priorities of interoperability measurement moving forward. To kick off the summit, KLAS shared our latest interoperability research; this study revealed vendor progress runs the gamut and varies depending on the aspect of interoperability (e.g., APIs, CCD exchange, HIEs, interfaces, etc.). As interoperability grows, there is a need for a more complete measurement of interoperability success.

A New and Expanded Measurement

A high-level, strawman measurement framework was created by a provider steering committee—affectionately dubbed the Fab 5 (see page 5). This framework was presented to the critical stakeholders at the summit to identify key priorities and gaps in the measurement prior to early testing (which will start in early 2021).
