Emergency Department Systems

Emergency Department Systems

The emergency department is increasingly being recognized as an essential area of automation. Hospitals are looking to ED systems to help solve problems created by increased patient volumes and clinician shortages, and also to help them comply with new regulations. But, as in other IT markets, there are a variety of solutions to choose from. What are the factors that differentiate one EDIS from another? Is it better to choose a best-of-breed product or stay with an enterprise vendor? Does throughput make a difference? The impetus to answer these and other related questions is the purpose of this 2008 study on ED systems.

KLAS gave its first detailed look into emergency department (ED) systems back in May 2002. Since that time, KLAS has continued to track vendor performance and trends, and monitor progress as the market evolved. For the purpose of this study, KLAS interviewed more than 600 hospital-based providers, with a goal to quantify their experience regarding the use of and satisfaction with ED systems.

Product functional strength was measured in eight areas. Collectively, functionality is strongest in Patient Triage & Tracking and Results Reporting; it is weakest in Clinical Decision Support. The vendors took turns leading in module functional strength scoring. Of the eight modules measured, eight of the eleven vendors either led or shared in the lead of a module functional strength score.

The following chart drills down into interfacing, specifically into orders and the extent to which orders did not have to be reentered into the interfaced system. In many cases, interfacing of discrete data, including allergies, is not happening.
