Ambulatory EMR Perception 2008

February 20, 2008

For this study, KLAS compiled opinions and perceptions of healthcare providers for vendors in the ambulatory EMR marketplace rather than actual performance scores. Providers shared their insights into their near-term plans for EMR purchasing, key criteria for selecting an EMR, which vendors they would consider in a purchase decision today and what impact (if any) the Stark law change or CCHIT have had on their actions. This report collected provider perceptions in the marketplace and does not contain performance ratings.

Cost or value was a key factor that providers mentioned influencing their EMR purchasing decision. However, higher costs were not necessarily viewed by providers as a deterrent from getting ones money's worth when implementing an EMR solution.

Even though the U.S. federal government introduced legislation in April of 2004 to encourage widespread use of electronic health records, EMR adoption remains low. However, the Stark law change has been energizing EMR deployment. What are provider plans in the EMR arena? What percent of providers anticipate purchasing an EMR solution in the next two years? How do providers view and evaluate vendors in the marketplace? And, how are providers approaching purchase of an EMR solution?

Perception studies focus on provider perceptions rather than actual performance scores in the marketplace.
