Ambulatory EMR Perception 2014
New Leaders Emerging as Market Shifts

Authored by: | Read Time: 2 minutes

As today’s ambulatory providers face new challenges, not all of the traditional mindshare leaders are the top considerations. This report explores who’s being considered, who’s being replaced, and why.

WORTH KNOWING

MARKET MAINSTAYS LOSING GROUND

Of respondents who recently switched EMRs, more moved away from GE Healthcare and NextGen than any other vendors. Looking forward, Allscripts, GE Healthcare, McKesson, and NextGen stand to lose more customers than other vendors as 40%–50% of their responding customers reported potential plans to leave.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICES ENTICED BY ATHENAHEALTH AND ECLINICALWORKS

Independent practices, which tend to be midsize to smaller practices, mention myriad vendors but give top consideration to athenahealth and eClinicalWorks, followed by Epic and Greenway, in their quest to resolve functionality, support, and cost concerns.

EPIC AND CERNER CAPTURING THE AFFILIATED MARKET

As larger practices have tightened their relationships with nearby hospitals for population health considerations, Epic’s and Cerner’s integrated platforms have benefitted most in mindshare. While providers have long considered Epic a viable ambulatory EMR option, Cerner has made significant progress recently with their ambulatory solution, and providers now consider it a legitimate option. athenahealth and Allscripts—who was once the mindshare leader—are next most considered, though well behind, by affiliated entities.

MINDSHARE MIRRORS CUSTOMER CONFIDENCE

Customer satisfaction with McKesson, NextGen, Allscripts, and GE Healthcare is relatively low, and customers report less confidence in these vendors’ meaningful use readiness. Allscripts and NextGen have decreased the most in mindshare recently, dropping them out of the top-four vendors in mindshare to the second tier with GE Healthcare and Greenway. Provider considerations of the not-yet-released Paragon ambulatory solution boosted McKesson’s overall mindshare, though both customer confidence and mindshare are low for Practice Partner and InteGreat EHR.
