General Ultrasound
Innovation on the Move

May 27, 2011

According to new research presented at the 2011 American Institute of Ultrasound annual meeting, partially substituting ultrasound for CT in evaluating appendicitis could save the U.S. healthcare system more than $1.2 billion annually. Providers recognize the value of ultrasound, and as a result, exam volumes are on the rise and most providers believe they will continue to increase. When asked what would drive the increase, one provider said, “More patients are actively trying to avoid getting CT scans and x-rays because of the radiation exposure.” Natural patient volume increases, new procedures, and radiation-dose concerns are just a few reasons that providers are using ultrasound more. Regardless of the reason for the increase, ultrasound equipment must be up to the challenge.
