Outpatient Pharmacy Goes Retail
A Paradigm Shift for Providers
Traditionally, outpatient pharmacy has not been a major focus of provider organizations’ overall strategies for patient care. However, the downturn in the economy has caused many organizations to see outpatient pharmacies as a way to not only save money on employee health costs, but also as a potential source of badly needed revenue. As a result, providers are looking for outpatient pharmacy systems with more retail functionality. Additionally, as accountable care organizations loom in the horizon, providers are beginning to see the outpatient pharmacy as an important part of the continuum of care. As a result, many health systems have been looking to more fully develop their outpatient pharmacies.
