Too often the narrative around cybersecurity for healthcare is told in terms of an organization taking a defensive posture to protect itself. Overlooked in that view is that elevating cyber to an organizational priority can deliver better outcomes and create value. Beyond just an IT function, it is about patients — protecting their trust, providing care without disruption and taking advantage of technology to improve care, cost and experience. None of that can happen when a health organizations is brought to heel by a cyber breach.

To understand where gaps remain in cyber strategy and execution, Ernst & Young LLP (EY US) and KLAS Research surveyed 100 healthcare executives responsible for cybersecurity decisions within their organization. In addition, the teams interviewed a panel of executives to bring in voices from health cyber professionals.

Our findings: Cyber needs to be a shared responsibility across the organization and the health ecosystem. In a time of tight budgets, cutting cyber investments can leave health organizations more vulnerable and ultimately lead to higher costs. Health executives must pivot from viewing cyber as a cost center to a strategic enabler of the business.
