In 2019, KLAS published our first look at digital pathology solutions. A number of leading organizations using digital pathology solutions for primary diagnosis were interviewed, with particular focus on reference sites from vendors in North America and Europe. The study highlighted some of the most prevalent vendors in the market, such as Philips and Sectra. KLAS also validated organizations using or considering other vendors, including TRIBVN Healthcare, for imaging management (i.e., PACS/workflow). TRIBVN Healthcare came to KLAS’ attention too late for them to be fully measured in the 2019 report. However, the vendor has since shared a customer list with KLAS, and this addendum examines the experience of those customers.

The framework below—from the 2019 report—details the technologies that healthcare organizations need to get started with digital pathology. For more on the performance of other digital pathology vendors, the best practices recommended by successful organizations, and potential benefits of the technology, see the full report.

microscopeThis addendum looks specifically at the deepest adopters of TRIBVN Healthcare’s CaloPix digital pathology solution. In July 2020, KLAS spoke with the four most deeply adopted customers, as identified by TRIBVN Healthcare (they represent about 25% of the vendor’s client base). These customers shared how the solution is being used, why they chose the vendor, how well the solution connects with various scanners, and what benefits they have achieved. Respondents came from French-speaking countries or countries with heavy French influence (France, Belgium, and Canada).

The chart below is a static view taken from KLAS’ 2019 digital pathology report. Only TRIBVN Healthcare’s data has been updated, based on the interviews with their most deeply adopted customers.

vendor scope and consideration for primary diagnosis

VENDOR SUMMARY: TRIBVN HEALTHCARE

KLAS interviewed four of TRIBVN Healthcare’s most advanced customers in digital pathology; these organizations are located in France, Belgium, and Canada. On average, these customers do about 25% of cases digitally through the TRIBVN solution (mostly histology cases), and the highest percentage of cases handled digitally is about 50%; the estimated number of cases read digitally ranged from 1,000 to 40,000 per year. Based on these estimates, leading TRIBVN Healthcare customers haven’t adopted digital pathology as deeply as organizations using Philips or Sectra. It should be noted that at some organizations, certain individuals have effectively gone fully digital themselves, but no organization is fully digital across the pathology department. In contrast, Philips and Sectra have customers with entire departments that are fully digital for histology slides. Today, CaloPix is mostly used for histology, and KLAS has also validated use of the solution for frozen sections and cytology/fluorescent slides.

Most considerations of TRIBVN Healthcare are from organizations in France or French-speaking/French-influenced areas (e.g., Belgium or Quebec, Canada). Organizations that choose TRIBVN Healthcare tend to also look at Philips, Sectra, Roche Diagnostics, Leica Biosystems, and Inspirata. Interviewed customers chose TRIBVN Healthcare because they are based in France and are often chosen by other local hospitals. Other decision factors include the ability to interface CaloPix (an open system) with various scanners, TRIBVN Healthcare’s willingness to partner with customers on development, the vendor’s sole focus on digital pathology, and a lower cost compared to other, multiregional solutions.

The benefits reported by TRIBVN Healthcare’s advanced users are similar to benefits mentioned by other vendors’ customer bases. These include improved efficiency in delivering slides to pathologists (since digital slides don’t have to be physically retrieved or moved around). This benefit was achieved almost immediately after the go-live.

Another benefit is the ability to share slides and collaborate with colleagues for second opinions or remote consultations. In response to COVID-19 in France, TRIBVN Healthcare set up a telepathology network through which customers and non-customers can share pathology images through the TRIBVN TeleSlide solution. While the network is relatively untested, it received positive feedback from interviewed advanced-user customers.

Most challenges mentioned by advanced-user customers are common across digital pathology. Difficulties include the change management process for digitizing pathology, as well as getting clinician buy-in. Respondents also mentioned trouble integrating with an outdated LIMS. A couple of organizations would also appreciate some usability enhancements from TRIBVN Healthcare; one cited the challenge of sorting through cases to find the relevant ones. Also, setting up queries is a very technical process and can’t be done by the average user.

Regarding artificial intelligence (AI), customers are looking forward to validating TRIBVN Healthcare’s algorithms for broader usage; today, most use of the vendor’s AI capabilities are for research or validation, not primary diagnosis.
