Smart Pumps 2011
The FDA Steps In - Provider Reactions to Market Turmoil

January 31, 2011

For smart pumps, 2010 was a turbulent year. In response to complaints about reliability and safety issues, nearly every major smart pump vendor, including Baxter, Sigma, CareFusion, and Hospira, was involved in some kind of pump recall. Of these vendors, Baxter was undoubtedly hit the hardest: in July 2010, the FDA issued a final order to recall, refund, or replace all Baxter COLLEAGUE pumps. The order affects an estimated 200,000 COLLEAGUE channels that will have to be replaced within two years.
