Accountable Care
Providers Forge the ACO Trail

August 29, 2011

Of all the subjects occupying the minds of healthcare IT executives today, accountable care may be the most daunting—and the most uncertain. While the details around accountable care organizations (ACOs) are still coming together, most executives are in agreement about two things: ACOs are going to be incredibly complicated to set up and they have the potential to turn the healthcare world upside down (for better or for worse). Accountable care will touch every aspect of an organization, from patient care to revenue cycle management to administration to IT infrastructure. For many organizations, ACOs will also require creating, purchasing, or partnering with business units that the organizations do not currently have, such as home health agencies or health plans.
