The Train Has Left The Station
“The train has left the station,” replied one CMIO when asked about healthcare reform in the 2012 political environment. He meant that regardless of any political outcomes, the industry will adopt new payment models that make providers responsible for outcomes as well as costs. The most notable reform engine, the accountable care organization (ACO), is well underway, carrying both hope and skepticism about its ultimate contribution. Based on a growing database of over 300 organizations that identified themselves as accountable care providers, plus in-depth interviews with 57 executives, this report describes how far the ACO train has travelled, who is on it, and what organizational models and HIT are powering its progress.
