One in 12 Women Develop Breast Cancer - What is being done?

I have always had a passion for the space of Women’s Imaging. However, recently it was brought much closer to home. Due to family history, my sister in law was tested and found positive for the presence of BRCA 1 and 2 (breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 and 2). It isn’t easy finding yourself affected by the one in 12 statistic.

As a young mother of four with dense breast tissue and the BRCA 1 & 2, she falls in the category of women that so many companies and physicians are having difficulty treating. Vendors seem to be cracking down on this issue. Several new products are being released which may help these women. We have seen Siemens enter back into the market with their own detector for digital mammography, Hologic brings out their breast tomography, more focus is coming forth from companies like U-Systems and Sonocine as they’ve developed breast specific ultrasound, and even the emergence of companies like Dilon and Naviscan with breast specific Nuc Med imaging. I’d love to know what providers feel is needed and what could help treat this category of women best.

What products are you looking to for women in this category? Which vendor are you betting on to come through with a good solution?
