From Burden to Bedside: A Nursing-Led Approach to Reducing Documentation Workload
Children's Health: KLAS Arch Collaborative Learning Summit 2026
Nurses consistently identify documentation burden as a barrier to efficient workflows and meaningful patient care. This session highlights Children’s Health’s nursing-led, governance-driven approach to reducing that burden while aligning interdisciplinary stakeholders. Nursing leadership partnered with informatics, operations, and clinical teams to prioritize Project RED optimization, flowsheet macros, copy-forward functionality, and emerging AI tools such as the AI end-of-shift summary. Attendees learned how to engage frontline nurses, translate feedback into action, secure organizational buy-in, and adopt technology that improves workflow, usability, safety, and nurse well-being. Learning objectives included identifying contributors to documentation burden and the role of governance; analyzing frontline and interdisciplinary engagement strategies; and evaluating the impact of workflow optimization and AI-supported tools on efficiency, usability, patient safety, and nurse well-being.
